Chapter 21
âI have to tell you something pretty awful,â I say.
My dad and I are sitting at the kitchen table, eating breakfast. I didnât sleep great, but I set my alarm to wake up to make sure I see him before he goes to work because I know I have to start laying some groundwork here. So weâre sitting at the table, eating bagels and drinking coffee.
âThatâs an ominous way to start the day,â he says.
âI know,â I tell him. âThere was a fire at work last night.â
He stops mid-bite. âIs everyone okay?â
I nod. âYeah, everyone is fine. Jen got everyone out, and it really only did damage to the back end of the shop. The kitchen and stuff.â
âOh, wow,â he says. âThatâs rotten. Iâm sorry.â
âShe says her insurance will cover everything and itâll be fine, but yeah. It sucks.â I pause and pick up my coffee. âSo Iâll be off work for at least a few days, if not longer.â
He frowns. âWell, thatâs a huge bummer, but totally understandable. Sheâs probably going to have to do a lot of paperwork and then line up contractors. And you can't exactly run a coffee shop if your kitchen isnât functional.â
âExactly.â I take a sip from my coffee. âSo not sure what Iâm going to do with my time off now.â
He chuckles. âI imagine youâll figure out a way to spend it.â
âWell, yeah,â I say. âIâm just not sure how yet.â
He sets his coffee down. âOkay. I know where this is going.â
I pick up my bagel from my plate. âYou do?â
âUh huh,â he says. âYouâre thinking that because I was a bit of a stickler about you getting a job while youâre taking time off from school that Iâll make you get another job while you wait for this one to come back. Right?â
I take a bite of my bagel and swallow. âUm. Yeah, I guess so.â
âWell, relax,â he says. âIâm not completely awful. You do not have to go out and find another job. Hopefully, the shop wonât be closed for that long. But until then, assuming itâs not forever, take some time off. Spend it with Trevor. Or just relax.â He winks at me. âYou and I are good. You did what I asked. Not your fault the shop has to close.â
Heâs making this easier than I thought and Iâm so grateful. Iâve been really worried that I was going to have to battle him about finding more work, but heâs totally backing off. And I finally feel like Iâm catching some sort of a break.
âOkay, cool,â I say. âAnd thanks. I donât know what Iâm going to do yet, but I just wanted to check with you.â
âI appreciate that, and I appreciate that you arenât just taking it for granted,â he says, picking up his plate and taking it to the sink. âSee? Communicating can be a good thing.â
âYeah.â
âAny idea how the fire started?â he asks.
I pick up my coffee and bring it to my lips so he canât see my expression.
